CE Course: Cultivating Culturally Competent Care

Course Description:

As Oregon’s population is increasingly more diverse, it is imperative for dental providers to develop skills in serving patients from varying population groups. Using popular education activities, attendees will explore and discuss methods to improve cultural sensitivity and communication with patients from diverse backgrounds. By implementing the four C’s for cultivating culturally competent care, attendees will gain confidence to use these skills in practice.

Course Objectives:

  •       Recognize how Oregon’s population is becoming more diverse
  •       List 8 factors which influence culture
  •       Identify four alternative oral health practices to heal oral diseases
  •       Practice communicating cultural sensitivity

About the Speaker:

Karen Hall received her B.S. in dental hygiene from OHSU in 1985. Since then she has practiced in family practices and community health settings. She has been involved in dental hygiene education as a supervisor for clinical rotations at OHSU and Pacific University. Since 2007, Karen has utilized her expanded practice dental hygiene permit to provide hygiene care to patients with limited access to dental care in many different settings. She was employed by Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center for 8 years treating pregnant women and children in the clinics, and families through school-based health centers. For 6 years, Karen developed and implemented oral health curriculum programs such as First Tooth through the Oregon Oral Health Coalition.  Currently Karen contracts with Capitol Dental Care as an Oral Health Integration Manager primarily in the Outreach program. She also contracts with Dental 3 to provide assessments, education and fluoride varnish to young children in child care settings in the greater Portland area.
